On 14 May, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) opened the 13th Central Asia Trade Forum (CATF). This year's forum is themed “Trade Integration: Going Global”. It is one of the flagship trade events in the region aimed at promoting co-operation, entrepreneurship and trade policy.

More than 300 business and government representatives from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the UK and the US have gathered in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to learn about trade opportunities in Central Asia. The forum sessions will discuss digitalization, transport, logistics, harmonization of procedures, trade regulation, World Trade Organization standards, and barriers to trade in Central Asia.

“We are proud to support the forum, which originated more than a decade ago with the belief that increased trade cooperation will lead to increased stability, prosperity and stronger ties among Central Asian countries”, said Zeinah Salahi, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator at USAID, in her address to the forum.

Keynote speakers include representatives of Central Asian trade ministries, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, QazTrade, the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route Association and the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA).

Events organized in parallel with the CATF:

  • A trade exhibition in which 40 companies from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan present agricultural, textile, clothing and food products.

  • Pakistan-Kazakhstan Trade Opportunities Forum for Women-Owned Businesses, where 40 Pakistani businesswomen explore trade opportunities in Central Asia.

  • The 11th Regional Meeting of National Trade Facilitation Committees, which will bring together business leaders and officials from five Central Asian countries to discuss customs, transport, border phytosanitary and veterinary controls.
